PreConception Counseling

PreConception counseling

Pre-pregnancy counseling should include ways to improve a couple’s chances of conception and advice on antenatal care to prevent disease and improve postnatal outcomes. If you are planning to have a baby you should see a gynecologist ideally at least 3 months before you get pregnant. This is known as a preconception visit, and the doctor will perform:

High Risk pregnancy
  • Ask for a history of past illnesses that may have an impact on future pregnancy.
  • Ask for a family history of illness that may have an impact on future pregnancy.
  • Perform a general examination to aid in the detection of basic problems.
  • Advice basic tests.
  • Determine your Rubella status. If you did not have rubella [German measles] as a child and were not immunized against it, you may need to take a Rubella vaccine and postpone your pregnancy by 3-6 months.
  • Take a folic acid supplement on a daily basis. This lowers the risk of some birth abnormalities.
  • Schedule a check-up/wellness visit with your doctor.
  •  Obtain and begin taking prenatal vitamins.
  • Discuss with your doctor any over-the-counter or prescription drugs you are presently using.
  • Limit your consumption of alcohol and caffeine and stop smoking.

What is included in preconception counseling?

  • Questions about lifestyle: Preconception counseling is not specific to reproductive organs, but rather to the entire body. A person’s lifestyle has an impact on his or her entire body and health.
  • Disease history: It is critical to know if the woman or her family have a history of illness. If there is something worth considering or something which might become an obstacle in the pregnancy, then proper care is required for the same.
  • Blood Tests: No medical examination is complete without a blood test. Blood tests are frequently used to diagnose diseases such as anemia. Anemia weakens the body, and it might be one of the causes of difficulties during pregnancy. It necessitates adequate follow-up.
  • Urine Sample Analysis: It is again an indicator of many important factors in pregnancy such as kidney health, protein content etc. It plays a very important role in pregnancy. Usually for couples whose attempts to have children have failed previously. However, many couples are unable to attend preconception counseling. It might be for any number of reasons. The most major cause is an unplanned pregnancy. Many preconception counseling sessions are missed as a result of an unplanned pregnancy. Preconception counselling is important since it addresses several aspects; for example, controlling glucose levels before and during pregnancy may greatly reduce the risk of miscarriage or stillbirth. Toxins, like alcohol, may cause significant harm and have long-lasting consequences, so their use must be carefully monitored. Even in situations of infertility, couples should get comprehensive preconception counseling before beginning infertility therapies. It would be really beneficial to them. Preconception counseling is also advisable to men.
